Huawei typically launches its Mate series flagship smartphones in the second half of the year and this year won’t be any different. The Huawei Mate 40 series is expected to launch in Q4 2020. While it was initially expected to ship with the new Kirin 1020 SoC, recent reports claim the new SoC will be called Kirin 1000 instead. It is said that the latest sanctions by the US Commerce Department will not affect the orders that are placed already. Hence it is rumoured the 5nm Kirin 1000 chipset is on track to power the Mate 40. The Mate 30 successor is claimed to debut some time in October.
Furthermore, the tipster from China notes that Huawei is expected to ship around 8 million Mate 40 units by the last quarter of this year. The Kirin 1000 SoC is said to have a codename “Baltimore” and is being built by TSMC. It could ship with a Cortex-A78 CPU. The SoC may launch a few weeks ahead of the Mate 40 announcement.
Noted analyst Ming-Chi Kuo back in April noted the Mate 40 will be equipped with free-form lens design and the company also intends to patent the design. Unfortunately not much else is known about the Huawei Mate 40 series at the moment, but we should know more in the days leading up to its announcement.
