Huawei Watch GT 2e unboxing and first impressions

Huawei Watch GT 2e unboxing and first impressions

Huawei has consistently delivered attractive and feature-rich smartwatches at reasonable prices. India has been a major focus for the company when it comes to launching IoT products and we’ve seen some really good smartwatches from the brand already. In December 2019, Huawei brought the Watch GT 2, which offered a classy, professional look along with some appealing smart features at Rs 14,990. Last month, the company launched the Watch GT 2e, which is similar in a lot of ways to the previous smartwatch, but targets a completely different audience.

The Huawei Watch GT 2e price in India is set at Rs 11,990, which makes it more affordable than the Watch GT 2 (review). It’s a youth-centric smartwatch, by which we mean the Watch GT 2e comes with a more dynamic look with new strap options that you won’t find on the Watch GT 2. While the Watch GT 2e is also powered by the same Kirin A1 chipset as its predecessor, it comes with some added features, such as supporting up to 100 sports modes (its predecessor could only support 15). We’ll unbox the Watch GT 2e now and offer our initial thoughts on Huawei’s latest smartwatch.

The Huawei Watch GT 2e retail box contains the smart watch itself along with some documentation, a puck-shaped wireless charger and a Type-C cord that connects to the charger.

Coming to the Watch GT 2e, the design is fairly similar to the previous model, particularly the body. It sports a circular dial with a tachymeter that is slightly different compared to the Watch GT 2. The body comes in black stainless steel or regular stainless steel. The Watch GT 2e comes with attractive watch straps that include Graphite Black, Icy White, Mint Green and Lava Red colour options.

The unit we received was the black stainless steel with the Lava Red straps. You can purchase additional straps separately. The Lava Red and Mint Green straps are the only ones that come with plenty of perforations to make it breathable. There are two buttons on the side of the body where the top one lets you access the menu and the bottom one takes you directly to the workouts section.

The Huawei Watch GT 2e sports a 1.39-inch AMOLED display with a 454×454 resolution. The screen looks great with punchy colours, good brightness levels and viewing angles. You get a bunch of traditional analogue and digital watch faces as well and tons more that can be downloaded via the Huawei Health app.

Speaking of Huawei Health, you need to install the app on your Android or iOS device to pair the watch. The app gives you an overview of your daily activity, heart rate and more. The app lets you enable notifications, continuous heart rate monitoring, sleep monitoring, set alarms and install software updates on the watch.

The watch comes preloaded with 15 workout modes, 13 running courses and it can support up to 100 workout activities via the app. It is equipped with features like Always On display, Bluetooth 5.1, GPS, 5 ATM water resistance, 4GB RAM, gyroscope, accelerometer, among other things. The smartwatch claims to deliver 14 days of battery life.

We will talk about the accuracy of fitness tracking, performance, display quality and the overall experience after trying out all the features in depth in our full review. Based on our brief interaction with the Huawei Watch GT 2e, we feel the watch lives up to its predecessor and offers attractive features for its price tag.
